Sasayama has long flourished as a road of importance to Kyoto. In the Edo period (1603-1867), Sasayama Castle was built on a hill in the center of the basin, and this is why Sasayama retains traces of old days as a castle town. It is easily accessible from Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe, and is now a popular tourist spot.
History and culture are not the only attractions of Tamba Sasayama. The local specialties grown in the clay soil and its unique climate with large temperature changes are highly valued and famous throughout Japan. Tamba black beans and black “Edamame” are the most popular ones. If you have tried them, you should already know how delicious the products made in Tamba Sasayama are. In addition to black soybeans and black edamame, there are other attractive local products including “Yamanoimo”(山の芋, Japanese yam), Tamba chestnuts, Tamba tea, Tamba Sasayama “Dainagon” (small red beans tasting sweet), and Tamba Sasayama beef.
The Okano district of Sasayama, where we visit for our activities, is located near the center of the Sasayama Basin. The Okano area has prospered in producing those local specialties.
In a class called "Practical Agriculture" at Kobe University, students connected with farmers in the Okano area for the first time and AGLOC was born from that class. Okano, which always welcomes us kindly, is a special place and a place of challenge for us, AGLOC.
